Coin Holders are square cardboard sleeves with a circular cutout of a specific diameter, containing a transparent film in the middle. The holder folds in half, and the coin is secured in one of two ways:
- By stapling the four sides with a stapler.
- By removing the protective layer from the adhesive surface and pressing the sides together.
Other types of holders are not considered standard unless they are homemade alternatives.

Guidelines for properly sealing a coin in a holder:
- Preparation. Pre-fold the holder and place one half on a flat surface.
- Positioning the coin. Place the coin inside the cutout with the desired side facing up.
- Removing air. Close the holder with the second half, press gently on the coin to push out air from the film, smoothing the film from the center outward while simultaneously sealing the cardboard sides.
- Securing. Use either staples or the adhesive strip for final sealing.
Although the process may seem lengthy in description, it becomes automatic with practice.
Recommendations for using coin holders:
Holder material. Always use plain white holders without any printing or decorations to prevent potential contamination from inks or coatings.
Choosing the size. Select a cutout diameter that is 1.5–2 mm larger than the coin, or add half the coin’s thickness, to prevent the coin from moving inside the film while still allowing the edge to be examined by gently pressing on it.
Storage conditions. Store coin holders under the same conditions as the coins themselves: avoid temperature fluctuations, direct sunlight, humidity, and mechanical damage.
Hygiene. Before placing the coin in the holder, clean it with alcohol, wear cotton gloves, and avoid touching the inside or breathing into the holder.
